So long, standards, electrical codes and other instructions used to read as if they stated as the prime selection and design criterion: “How hot must my cable least run?” From now on, however, a cable should no longer be considered “best used” if the maximum permissible operating temperature is really reached. Due to the lower losses, a larger cross section would save energy and hence real money. This shall be explained in detail and comprehensively below.
